As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup intensifies, Wyandotte County, Kansas, is taking proactive steps to ensure a successful and memorable event. Recently, the county assembled a dedicated task force comprising various stakeholders—from businesses to state officials and local leaders—to spearhead preparations for this global sporting extravaganza.
Led by David Johnston, who serves as both the Wyandotte County Administrator and a member of KC 2026, the task force is charged with a pivotal role in the World Cup preparations. While KC 2026 oversees the broader planning efforts, Wyandotte’s task force focuses specifically on hosting at least one international team during their training period.
“We’re not just making recommendations to government entities; we’re activating our community into action,” Johnston emphasized. “Soccer fans are passionate about their national teams, and we’re preparing to host teams here for up to 45 days during the tournament.”
Kansas City is set to host six World Cup matches, primarily in the group stage, with Arrowhead Stadium also slated to host a quarterfinal game. As part of the preparations, one of the international teams will utilize the state-of-the-art facilities at Children’s Mercy Park. Discussions are underway to secure a host hotel, with hopes that the new Margaritaville will be considered for this role.
The task force’s agenda includes comprehensive discussions on planning logistics, marketing strategies, and enhancing on-site experiences for visitors. Their efforts aim not only to ensure seamless operations but also to showcase Wyandotte County on the global stage.
“We have less than two and a half years to get everything right and make our community shine,” Johnston remarked optimistically. “This is our opportunity to shine brightly on the international stage.”
With expectations high and preparations underway, Wyandotte County is gearing up to welcome the world in 2026, eager to demonstrate its readiness and hospitality during this prestigious global event.
